Harking back to the middle ages, the word ‘Whiskey’ is an Anglicised version of the Latin ‘uisce’ from ‘uisce beatha’ meaning ‘water of life’. It was revered back then and continues to be so now, with good reason.
With a smoother taste and more mellow, fresh, flavours, Irish Whiskey is distilled similarly to Scotch, bar a few notable differences. The grains used for brewing are unmalted. This gives it a ‘cleaner’ taste, and there is usually no inclusion of the smoky peat flavour which is often found in Scotch Whisky. Finally- Irish Whiskey is given a third distillation, one more than its Scottish cousins, resulting in a lighter, smoother finish.
