Though the origins of the word Bourbon have never been entirely proven, what we can agree is that it’s one of the world’s most loved Whiskies. Made traditionally but with an American take on the details, this sweet, full-flavoured spirit is one that we can all recognise.
Rather than the usual barley or rye, this spirit is made using a mash of over 51% corn. Bourbon is distilled and aged in new, charred oak, barrels which lend the spirit its toasted flavour. The length of the maturation process is up to each distillery, though to be classed as an authentic Whiskey in Europe it needs to be casked for more than three years.
With the idea initially brought over from the UK by Scotch and Irish immigrants, the Americans have their mark very much on Whiskey. The smooth sweetness of Bourbon makes it ideal as a standalone drink or as the perfect spirit for the likes of an Old Fashioned, Whiskey Sour or Manhatten. There are even recipes with it mixed into chocolate cake because, well, why wouldn’t you?
