Courvoisier
The History of Cognac
Courvoisier is a brand of French cognac owned by Beam Suntory, the third largest producers of distilled beverages worldwide.
This fine cognac dates all the way back to 1835 where legend has it Napoleon Bonaparte visited the distillery in 1811 before the brand was even truly established! Apparently he liked Courvoisier so much that he ordered several caskets and even requested them as his one luxury item when he was sent into exile- we can’t really blame him.
Courvoisier was originally founded in Paris by Felix Courvoisier and inherited by his two nephews after he died in 1866. It was then sold to a major wine distribution company called Simon Freres, who are recognised for truly establishing the brand and even introducing the famous slogan “The Brandy of Napoleon.”
But as the company continued to grow more financial backing was required, which subsequently led to Courvoisier being owned by Beam Suntory where it has remained to this day.
Is Courvoisier a good Cognac?
Courvoisier is considered such a fine brandy that (as of this date) it’s the UK’s number one selling cognac! One of the British favourites is Courvoisier VSOP described as a perfect balance between floral and fruity and not to mention Courvoisier Gold for those looking for a more sophisticated drink.
