History of Captain Morgan
They’re called Captain Morgan because they AAARRRGGGHHH… me hearties
Despite the real Captain Morgan living in the 17th century, Captain Morgan as a brand is fairly new. The brand was founded in 1943 by a company called Seagram’s who bought the right to create a spiced rum from a Jamaican pharmacy that turned out to be a big hit.
It wasn’t until 2001 that Seagram decided to pull away from the drinks industry and sold Captain Morgan (and a few other alcohol brands) to Diageo who footed the bill for £5.5 billion, a very wise purchase indeed.
Who was Captain Morgan?
Captain Morgan himself was actually known as Sir Henry Morgan and was born in Wales, 1635. He was what’s known as a privateer (which is basically a pirate but with the law on his side) and sailed to the Caribbean to protect British Colonial interests as ordered by the government.
Needless to say, a lot of his time was spent ransacking Spanish ships and contributing to British war efforts in some pretty destructive ways, regardless, he has become the iconic figurehead of the brand we know today.
Is Captain Morgan a Good Rum?
To simply put it, yes. Captain Morgan now offers a vast range of rums uniquely blended with natural flavours and spices including spiced, dark, white with a variety of different flavours like coconut, apple, and even as a seasonal treat- gingerbread.
But don’t just take our word for it, in 2014 an astonishing $224 million was made in the U.S. titling the brand as the second most popular liquor in America and since then the brand has just kept on growing.
