Caol Ila Whisky
Unique pronunciation, unique whiskey
Located on the Isle of Islay, Caol Ila whisky is produced in the largest of the eight working distilleries since 1846 and is commonly recognised for its distinct smoky flavour.
The founder of the distillery, Hector Henderson, named the whisky after the Sound in which the distillery is set (pronounced 'Cull-Eela'), translating to the ‘Sound of Islay’ in Scottish Gaelic. It is said that the distillery is quite hidden on the island and can only be recognised by true Islay locals.
For more than a hundred years most of the transportation for Caol Ila was done by small puffer ships that brought empty casks and barley straight to the distillery. In fact, it wasn’t until 1972 the old distillery was built and improved upon adding six stills as opposed to the original two, making it the largest producer on Islay Island.
Caol Ila 12
This particular whisky has been rated one of Caol Ila’s very finest and even won best single malt Scotch in the international whisky competition of 2015. It’s described as light and fresh with the distinct smoky taste of Caol Ila and was originally introduced in 2002.
