The Italian aperitif, Aperol is a popular choice of appetiser – and perhaps most famed for the Aperol Spritz. It’s characterised by a bright, orange-rose colour and slightly bitter herbal tones finishing with a bold orange flavour. It took seven long years of development before the aperitif was ready for market back in 1919.
The full recipe for the drink is still a secret but a few ingredients have been revealed: gentian roots, rhubarb and cinchona. The popular Aperol spritz sees the aperitif mixed with Prosecco and soda water, while an Aperol Sour includes a healthy glug of gin.
