Halloween is a feast that is celebrated in some countries in the world on the 31 October. This day is the last one on the Celtic calendar. Halloween initiates the three days observance of the Allhallowtide. This is the time in the liturgical year that is dedicated to the remembrance of the departed including the saints (hallows), martyrs and the faithful departed.
Most people believe that Halloween has its roots from Celtic harvest festivals, to be specific, the Gaelic Festival Samhain and then much later the festival was Christianized as Halloween. Other sources show that Halloween started as a Christian festival for the departed saints.
Halloween continues to evolve over the time. It has many activities associated with it. This includes carving pumpkins into Jack -o’- lanterns, apple bobbing, lighting bonfires, attending Halloween parties, watching horror movies, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, and telling scary stories. On the other hand, the people who have remained somewhat attached to the Christian meaning of Halloween attend church services and light candles on the graves of the dead. It is believed that ancient Christians abstained from the consumption of meat on All Hallows Eve. Instead, they ate other foods that were categorically set aside for this festival. This included potato pancakes, soul cakes and apples.
It is believed that trick or treating evolved from the middle ages custom of offering freshly baked soul cakes to children who went from door to door offering prayers on All Hallows Eve. It was believed that each soul cake that was eaten reflected one soul being freed from Purgatory. All these activities vary from one country to another. For instance, in Denmark, Norway and Germany children wear the Halloween costumes and trick-or-treat on the New Years Eve. In Sweden, children dress up and trick-or-treat on the Thursday before Easter.
Over the years, Halloween in the United States was equal to Vandalism. Children and young adults would take it a little too far, and massive damage was evident. However, modern young people and adults have found better ways of celebrating Halloween. Alcoholic drinks are and have always been part and parcel of festivals and celebrations.
